Rhythm Guide: OK EG – Prismatic Spring | Animalia

For this week’s Rhythm Guide we have exciting Australian duo OK EG who released their EP Prismatic Spring on Animalia. The label – curated by  Kia Sydney – focusses on exploring the lesser-known and deeper artists of Naarm’s north.

With the release of Prismatic Spring the label marks its third release where the Naarm based duo – Lauren Squire & Matthew Wilson – takes you on a exploration through the deeper sounds. After their first EP release Anther on Steeplejack, OK EG keeps on experimenting with unpredictable rhythms, using and combining different samplers, sequencers, and synths to manipulate sounds.

The EP starts with Alkaline, an A1-peak time track which sounds straight forward with a heavy drum beat and ongoing acid melody serving as a great introduction of the tracks to follow. The second track Prismatic Spring directly drags you deeper into the minds of OK EG with bold rhythms and sonic waves really owing up to the distinct sound of OK EG but also the label. Phase Transitions picks up the pace with a 2-step kind of drum beat and more present high-hats leading to a rising acidic trance melody in which makes you go into a uplifting state of mind. The final track – highlight of the EP – Triple Point perfectly combines ambient waves with broken beat and electro which feels very hypnotic and serves as the perfect track to close the EP.
