Rhythm Guide: Vegyn – Like A Good Old Friend | PLZ Make It Ruins

On his 2019 breakthrough Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds, Vegyn was constantly stitching in novel details and samples into his songs like he was making a patchwork quilt. In Like A Good Old Friend he opens up his sound for an EP of spacious, leftfield electronic pop and offers a more approachable side of his sound. It’s this week’s pick in our Rhythm Guide series.

Vegyn created an impact on a global level through collaborating with Frank Ocean on his seminal ‘Endless’ and ‘Blonde’ projects, a partnership that lives on with Vegyn co-hosting Ocean’s Blonded show.

The EP’s pensive works were born out of improvisation at the piano, an instrument that Vegyn picked up during quarantine. In ‘I See You Sometimes’ the London-raised, Los Angeles-based artist reunited with East-London rapper Jeshi for a distorted and woozy production, in which he’s at his best while title track ‘Like A Good Old Friend’ brings in beautiful luscious dreamscapes. It effortlessly traverses electronic, dance, alternative and rap influences whilst retaining a playful, carefree attitude.
